Amigo Horse Rugs Do The Job Right

By Kendra Hood

Owners are finding that Amigo horse rugs provide excellent value for money. Most horses and ponies have at least one rug and often more. It really depends on how much work the animal is required to do and weather on not they live outside. Many people like to keep their animals stabled in the cold, wet winter months as they stay clean and it cuts down dramatically on grooming time.

A traditional rug was very heavy and practically impossible to keep clean. They were made of an outer shell of thick canvas lined with blanketing material. Although they did the job there were often a number of issues. These included the animal being rubbed on the chest and shoulders from the friction of rough fabric. The rug was also prone to leaks and dampness, leaving many animals cold and uncomfortable.

Because of the problems associated with working horses in winter most people opt to have their animals clipped. Clipping removes the thick heavy hair and allows the animals to be exercised in comfort. Yet once their warm protective hair has been removed they need at least one rug to keep them warm. In the past few years an new range of light weight but very warm clothing has been developed for horses.

Even horses that are stabled need to be turned out into the field every day to stretch their legs and let off steam. This also allows them to socialize with other horses and prevents boredom. A good turn out rug is very important. Owners should look for something that is not too heavy, but still provides wind and water resistance. Horses that live outside all the time will need a rug that is totally water proof.

The Amigo company has been at the forefront of horse clothing manufacture for many years. They have gone back to the drawing board to develop a totally new line of rugs that are cut to fit a horses body shape properly. This eliminates the old problem of rubbing and chaffing that left many horses with bald areas particularly on their chest and shoulders. The new style of rug is loaded with great features that makes it very user friendly and easy to care for.

The traditional front buckles have been replaced with an overlapping Velcro fastener which is easy to use especially on cold days. It also eliminates the pressure that was a problem with the older styles. The rug is held in place by simple straps called surcingles that cross under the horses belly. Again they do not cause any pressure points and are easy to use.

Additional leg straps will stop the rug from blowing up over the horses back in the wind. The new nylon fabrics are very light and can often be machine washed. This gives them a significant advantage over the older heavy blankets. The new lining actually help to polish the horses coat for extra shine.

The Amigo brand is available in many local retail outlets. Riders and owners should check with their local tack store. Alternatively they can shop on line and have the new rug shipped to their home or barn.
