By Karyn Shields

Anxiety is a condition that ails many people. For starters, anxiety is not bad in itself. It is a perfectly normal reaction to situations worth the reaction. The problem starts when it is so excessive that it takes control of your life. Usually, it is a symptom; muscles feel tensed, state of panic etc. At this point, it is wise to consult anxiety psychological services Calgary for professional help.

Phobias, post traumatic stress disorder and excessive worrying are all forms of anxiety disorders. Excessive worrying or generalized this disorder is worrying about something constantly for more than six months with symptoms of insomnia, fatigue and restlessness. Phobias are constant and persistent fear of situations, events and objects while PTSD presents after a terrifying event causing you to constantly relive the traumatic events.

Prolonged uneasiness is generally characterized by excessive worrying. A lot of people worry about money, work, school, health etc even when there is nothing really to worry about. Another symptom is avoidance. Patients tend to avoid situations which cause them to become anxious which does not help. Patients may also be irritable, suffer sleeplessness, fatigue, trembling and headaches. Other people may find their muscles tense or urinate more frequently than normal.

Once you consult a psychologist, you will be given an appointment. During the first session, you will describe your symptoms to the doctor who will then properly diagnose your condition. Based on the diagnosis, the doctor will prescribe the best therapy to treat the disorder. Medicine or psychotherapy or a combination of both is used for effective treatment.

Medicinal therapy is prescribed if the disorder is not severe or during the course of the psychotherapy to keep symptoms at bay. Medicinal therapy does not cure anxiety disorders as it does not address the cause. Such medicines include antidepressants, beta-blockers and SSRIs which must be prescribed by your doctor.

Other cases demand psychotherapy sessions to explore the cause of the disorder. Psychotherapy is therapy in form of dialogue with a trained professional to discover the cause of the mental disorder and deal with the symptoms. Such therapies include Cognitive-behavioral therapy which helps patients change their way of thinking and how they react to situations that cause them to become anxious.

So what helps? Some good amount of self care is good to prevent being anxious. For instance, sleep enough, work out and eat healthy and well balanced foods. Self help skills such as meditation, good communication, proper time management and positive self talk also help. If a certain situation may cause you to be anxious, anticipating helps. For example, if school exams make you anxious, prepare for them in advance so that when they come, you are ready.

You may also try deep breathing exercises and reassuring yourself when about to face an anxious episode attack. Try to remember when you were in a similar situation and came out successfully. Do not focus on yourself or your shortcomings but rather on other nice things such as the environment. However, what will help the most is a trained professional. It is what they do, so trust them.
